Trump calls for elected officials to be jailed as troops arrive in Chicago

Donald Trump called yesterday for the imprisonment of Brandon Johnson, Chicago's mayor, and JB Pritzker, the Illinois governor, accusing them of failing to protect US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) officers.
Trump wrote on his social media site, Truth Social: "Chicago Mayor should be in jail for failing to protect Ice Officers! Governor Pritzker also!"
National guard troops have begun arriving in the Chicago area at the order of the Trump administration, despite objections from Illinois officials, including Pritzker and Johnson, who are Democrats. In response to Trump's post, Johnson said: "This is not the first time Trump has tried to have a Black man unjustly arrested. I'm not going anywhere."
Pritzker said on social media: "I will not back down. Trump is now calling for the arrest of elected representatives checking his power. What else is left on the path to full-blown authoritarianism?"
National guard troops from Texas arrived at Elwood army reserve centre, an army training centre about 50 miles outside Chicago, yesterday.
The president has called Chicago a "hellhole" of crime, although police statistics show significant drops in most crimes, including homicides.
