Thousands to protest in Philippines over corruption

Thousands of people are expected to join a mass protest in Manila tomorrow over perceived corruption in state-funded flood-control projects.
The “trillion peso march” is named after the Greenpeace estimate of $17.6bn that the environmental organisation alleges was skimmed off climate-related projects in 2023.
The demonstration has historical significance, with tomorrow the anniversary of the day in 1972 when the then-leader, Ferdinand Marcos, imposed martial law. Marcos was eventually forced to flee the country in 1989 amid widespread public discontent and allegations of rampant corruption that brought his long reign to an end.
