Poundland's owner warns of lower earnings and says chain may be sold off

Poundland's owner could put the chain up for sale, saying it faces tough competition and increased wage costs from next month under Labour's tax-raising plans.
Pepco, which is based in Poland, yesterday said it was considering "all strategic options" to spin out the 825 stores from the wider group. These include a potential sale.
Its high street rival WH Smith is already examining bids for its outlets. The restructuring specialists Hilco and Alteri are in the running along with HMV's owner, Doug Putman.
Retailers warn of thousands of job cuts and have put the blame on slow sales and the higher burden from increased national insurance contributions. Households are keeping a tight rein on spending amid rising costs for energy bills, groceries, rent and mortgages.
