Passive Boulter rues missed chances in loss to Maneiro

The British No 1, Katie Boulter, expressed frustration at her passive, cautious play after enduring one of her most disappointing defeats of the season, losing 7-5, 7-5 to Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in the second round of the US Open.

Boulter, the 31st seed and favourite to win here, started well. After leading 4-2 in the opening set, she created a set point at 5-4 on Maneiro's serve, but sprayed a routine forehand long before losing three consecutive games to concede the set. Despite fighting back from 2-5 down in set two, Boulter paid for her inconsistency in the decisive moments.

Afterwards, she was frustrated about her timid approach to the match and how she failed to step inside the baseline and dominate.
