Musk intervenes as Trump faces dilemma over key treasury role

Elon Musk has weighed in on Donald Trump's choice for US treasury secretary, one of the remaining key cabinet nominations the president-elect will make in the coming days.
Musk voiced his support on X for a candidate who would not be "business as usual" and would "actually enact change" as he backed Trump's transition co-chair Howard Lutnick to lead the treasury department over Scott Bessent, who has said he wants the US to remain the world's reserve currency and use tariffs as a negotiating tactic.
Musk's intervention in the battle for the key post - which advises on economic and fiscal matters, including spending and taxes - comes amid anxiety over the Tesla and SpaceX leader's proximity to Trump.
Some in Trump's circle expressed surprise that Musk would weigh in on the choice of treasury secretary, according to the Washington Post. "People are not happy," one said, according to the outlet, adding that Musk was acting as a "co-president".
