Ice storm Goretti hits Normandy with record windspeeds

Germany was last night braced for up to 20cm (8in) of snow after record winds from Storm Goretti cut power to almost 400,000 French homes.
No major or widespread damage to property was reported in France yesterday but one man was seriously hurt after slipping from his roof while trying to replace fallen tiles.
Another 27 people suffered minor injuries and several of them needed hospital treatment.
The national weather service, Météo-France, had issued severe weather warnings urging residents to remain at home. Gusts of at least 213km/h (132mph) were recorded overnight on Thursday in Gatteville and Val-de-Saire in Normandy.
Windspeed records were also broken in Brittany and a gust of 148km/h was registered at the top of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. More than 380,000 homes, mainly in Normandy and Brittany, were without power at lunchtime yesterday.
