Architect who designed MI6 headquarters and was key to 'hi-tech' movement dies at 87
The Guardian
|September 30, 2025
Terry Farrell, the "nonconformist" architect and planner whose bold designs included the MI6 headquarters in London, has died aged 87.

His studio in London confirmed his death in an Instagram post, saying: “It is with deep sadness that, on behalf of his family, the partners and practice of Farrells acknowledge the death of our founder, Sir Terry Farrell."
Farrell was one of the key minds behind the "hi-tech" movement of the 1980s and 90s, creating futuristic buildings such as the TV-am studios in Camden, north London.
Nicholas Grimshaw, who died earlier this month, was a longtime collaborator, with the pair creating the Herman Miller Factory in Bath and the 125 Park Road residential complex in London - and both creations were considered emblematic of their style and approach.
Born in Sale, Cheshire, in 1938, Farrell grew up on what he described as "the edge of the edge" of Newcastle, "on a building site next to the fields" in a council estate called the Grange.
