Operator appointed for waste incinerator

CALL FOR ANSWERS TO NUMEROUS CONCERNS
AN OPERATOR has been confirmed for a controversial household waste incinerator to be built on land at Teesworks, near Grangetown.
Viridor was the only bidder remaining from a lengthy procurement exercise conducted on behalf of several North-East councils - Darlington, Durham, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Newcastle, Redcar and Cleveland and Stockton - for the Tees Valley Energy Recovery Facility (TVERF).
This was after another bidder, Green Recovery Projects Ltd, was removed from the process. Some councillors along with anti-incineration groups have been opposed to the scheme both on environmental and financial grounds.
After outline planning consent was achieved for a site at Teesworks, bids were invited for the project with final tenders being received from Viridor and Green Recovery Projects in March 2023, prior to the granting of full permission in July of that year by Redcar and Cleveland Council.
