'NOT ENOUGH TIME TO BRAKE', INQUEST TOLD

Killed biker 'could not avoid car turning right'

A MOTORCYCLIST killed in a crash on the North Yorkshire Moors "did not have time to brake" after a car pulled into his path, an inquest has heard.

Jeff Amer was heading home to Middlesbrough from Whitby on the A171 near Danby when a VW Golf moved into the carriageway.

His friend, Andrew Williams, swerved out of the car's path but Mr Amer, 58, a married father-of-two, was unable to avoid it, Middlesbrough Coroners' Court was told.

Mr Williams said the pair, who had been out to a chip shop with two other bikers, were travelling at 50 to 60mph, when the crash occurred in the early evening of September 9, 2021.

Giving evidence at the inquest Mr Williams said: "At brow of hill I saw a black estate car covering the lane. It was moving slowly forward.

"As I came the car has started to move out. I braked as hard as I could and I went around it. I looked in my rear view mirror hoping Jeff had managed to avoid it.

"The car has stopped for some reason Jeff never had time to go around it."

Eyewitness Roderick Gordon, who was behind the Golf in a white Renault Kangoo van, saw the collision with Mr Amer's Suzuki GSX-R1000.
