To my knowledge the term “revenge dressing” was first used back in 1994 when Princess Diana stepped out in an off-the-shoulder Christina Stambolian dress the same night the then Prince Charles confessed his infidelity in a TV interview.

With its risque-for-a-royal asymmetric hemline and exposed decolletage, the black number, which she paired with a pearl choker to attend a high-profile event at London's Serpentine Gallery, ensured that Di, not her husband, made the front pages.

Since then, following a public breakup, celebrities (particularly if they are the wronged party), are almost expected to follow suit and grace the red carpet in their own version of the revenge dress.
