GO WILD WITH ERIC PAYLOR

ONE of the rarest butterflies which you are ever likely to see is the clouded yellow.

This bright yellow butterfly is an irregular visitor to Britain from the Mediterranean and is happy in virtually any type of environment where there are plenty of flowers.

This absolutely fabulous picture of a clouded yellow visiting our region last week was taken by Martyn Sidwell.

The clouded yellow is impossible to confuse with other species because of its deep marigold yellow wings, with a row of black spots and a white-centred figure of eight marking on the hindwing.

One of the reasons that the clouded yellow is rarely seen here is that it is unable to withstand cold weather.

Obviously it came in on the warm winds which provided our recent heatwave.
