Developer's 'sadness' at 'negativity' over plans for aparthotel
The Gazette
|August 07, 2025
THE owner of a business centre has spoken of his sadness at “speculation” and “negativity” surrounding plans to turn office space into apartments.
Supreme Properties has applied for planning permission to change the top, third floor of Middlesbrough's TAD Centre from office space into 16 serviced apartments. The company says the aim is a hybrid hotel and self-catering visitor accommodation for contractors working in the area for short periods, enjoying large demand because of developments like Teesworks.
The “aparthotel” would be similar to renting an apartment using a hotel-style booking system and check-in area, but with no fixed contracts with occupants able to “check out” whenever they wish.
Guests of the 16 “live/work and short-term let studios” would be able to use the ground-floor gym, with a lift access area to be turned into a small laundry area and communal space.
However, the plans, being considered by Middlesbrough Council since November last year, for the centre on Ormesby Road, Berwick Hills have attracted some objections. The owner of the centre has now spoken out, saying there is “no truth” to speculation about the proposals, which he said would support the local economy and bring 10 jobs.
One objector wrote on the council’s planning portal: “There is a very large concern in the local community that this HMO will be used to house illegal migrants.”
