GAS RELEASE WAS TWICE ALLOWED LIMIT

£175k fine for venting breach

The north shore of Tees looking towards Seal Sands, where CATS North Sea Limited operates

A FIRM has been fined for pumping out more than double the amount of gas it was allowed to - and also in a shorter time frame than permitted.

The North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA) has fined CATS North Sea Limited (CATS) £175,000 for venting more than twice the consented volume of gas at its Teesside terminal.

CATS, at the Seal Sands, was permitted to vent a maximum of four tonnes of gas in 2024 from its central area transmission system terminal, but it vented 10.02 tonnes - primarily methane - between January 1 and September 24.

When applying for its 2024 consent, the operator underestimated the volume of gas that would be vented in a planned shutdown and was slow to identify and deal with the breach, the watchdog said.
