Street food is defined as foodstuff that's prepared and sold by vendors in open public spaces (typically on roadsides) for immediate consumption.

Street food's earliest incarnations has been traced to date thousands of years in the past — with small fried fish believed to be the first type of street food sold in ancient Greece. Poor urban residents, whose tenement homes did not have hearths or ovens, often ate street food — with some even subsisting on them.
