Phl poised for continued growth amid political, global headwinds

The Philippine economy is showing resilience in the face of domestic political turbulence and global trade headwinds, with growth forecast to remain among the fastest in Asia, according to economists speaking at the Logistics Conference 2025 hosted by Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI).

Professor Ronilo Balbieran of the University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P) said the country's economic fundamentals remain intact despite ongoing corruption scandals and external pressures such as high tariffs imposed by major trading partners.

"With or without a good President, the Philippine economy has historically managed to grow by at least 5 percent," Balbieran told delegates.

"As long as rallies remain peaceful, stability holds," he added.

The Philippines' long-term trajectory, he noted, has been shaped less by political leadership than by strong demographic demand, private sector activity, and steady inflows from overseas workers.

Net primary income from abroad continues to provide a vital buffer, pushing gross national income consistently above GDP—a rarity among emerging economies.
