P1.3T lost to corruption in flood control projects

In just four years, the government lost an estimated P1.3 trillion in public funds to systemic corruption in flood control projects under the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), lawmakers revealed.

“It is unacceptable that trillions have been spent, yet our people are still drowning in floods. Agencies must explain why these projects failed and who allowed these mistakes to continue year after year,” Rep. Robert Nazal of Bagong Henerasyon party-list said.

Nazal urged the DPWH and other agencies to account for every peso and answer for years of failed projects, calling instead for a comprehensive approach.

“What we need is a science-based, nationwide flood control blueprint—not band-aid solutions scattered across districts,” he stressed. “Until government comes up with a clear, coordinated plan, no amount of budget will solve this crisis.”
