MCWD urged to beef up conservation measures

The Cebu Electricity Rights Advocates (CERA) has called on the Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD) anew, this time urging it to adopt more aggressive efficiency and conservation measures.

This comes as the group continues to warn that persistent system losses are worsening Metro Cebu's already critical water and power supply challenges.

CERA convenor Nathaniel Chua, in a statement, said the water district must strengthen its infrastructure management and reduce inefficiencies as demand in Metro Cebu continues to surge.

According to the group, Metro Cebu is currently facing a major supply gap, with water demand projected at 600,000 cubic meters per day, while actual production typically fluctuates around 300,000 cubic meters daily.

"We desperately need new water supply sources to meet our growing demands," Chua said.

CERA presented a comparative analysis of Non-Revenue Water (NRW), which refers to water lost through leaks, theft, or metering inaccuracies before it reaches consumers. The analysis shows that Cebu's main water utility continues to struggle with significant system losses compared with industry leaders.
