Mandaue govt. implements cost-cutting measures

The Mandaue City Government has begun implementing austerity measures to prevent a possible budget deficit by the end of the year.

Acting city treasurer Claire Cabalda told reporters yesterday that the city has started controlling cash flow through cost-cutting and by holding or deferring certain expenses that can be postponed, without disrupting the day-to-day operations of its offices.

Also yesterday, Mayor Thadeo Jovito “Jonkie” Ouano convened all department heads to discuss and align on the measures.

“Maong nag in-place ta og austerity measures because we fear nga basin at the end of the year basin ma-deficit ta pero mao na atong gilikayan,” said Cabalda.

While the city is cutting costs, Cabalda clarified that the austerity measures will not affect basic services provided to residents.

She explained that the City Treasurer’s Office has conducted a cash-availability projection to ensure sufficient budget appropriations for essential services so that these will not be disrupted.

“Atong gi try og cost-cut is something dili basic services, katong pwede dili ingon ana ka necessary, or pwede ba unya nalang ang implementation,” she said.

Cabalda also clarified that there are two types of deficits. First, when revenue and tax collections fall short of the target, and second, when actual expenditures exceed collections.
