Increase in senior's annual aid pushed

The Cebu City Council has approved a motion seeking to increase the annual financial assistance for senior citizens to P15,000 and to relax residency requirements to widen the program's coverage.
Councilor Sisinio Andales, minority floor leader, moved to increase the cash assistance to senior citizens after his privilege speech on Wednesday.
A senior citizen himself, Andales, underscored the sector’s continued financial struggles despite its many contributions to the city.
Under Cebu City Ordinance No. 2453, eligible seniors currently receive P12,000 annually.
Andales said this amount, while helpful in the past, no longer meets the needs of today’s elderly due to rising costs and inflation.
“What was sufficient in the past, may now be, inadequate to meet even the most basic necessity,” he said.
