'Giving Machines' roll out across Phl to spark charity

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is widening its annual #LightTheWorld initiative across the Philippines, urging the public to divert part of their December spending from traditional holiday shopping to charitable causes a push that highlights a growing culture of generosity and social responsibility in the country.

- Ehda M. Dagooc

Bacolod City will host the “Giving Machines” for the first time on Dec. 4, joining Manila, Cebu and Davao in what has become one of the country’s fastest-growing year-end charity traditions.

The vending machine-style kiosks allow donors to purchase specific items—from food packs and hygiene kits to medical care and youth rehabilitation services—for vulnerable groups.

The expansion comes as organizations encourage Filipinos across income levels to give, regardless of the size of their contribution. “We don’t set targets for amounts,” said Elder Carlos G. Revillo Jr., Philippines Area President of the Church. “What matters is participation. Even small donations count. The giver receives as much blessing as the receiver.”
