Food centers featuring local produce to rise

The Cebu provincial government is set to establish three pilot People's Food Centers in a move aimed at helping local farmers and fisherfolk sell their produce directly to consumers without going through middlemen.

Provincial Agriculturist Dr. Roldan Saragena said the centers will rise in Poblacion, Medellin; Maslog, Danao; and Poblacion III, Carcar, with each facility designed to become a direct marketing hub for agricultural and fishery products.

The project, a brainchild of Governor Pamela Baricuatro, seeks to create spaces where farmers and fisherfolk can personally sell their goods, ensuring fairer earnings for them and more affordable prices for buyers.

Saragena said the Provincial Government has already conducted the opening of bids last Tuesday, February 3, for the construction of the three facilities.

Each People's Food Center building has an estimated construction cost of P4.4 million, while the equipment and fixtures inside each facility are projected to cost around P2 million.
