Ex-gov Garcia defends handling of P1.2B Special Education Fund

Former Cebu governor Gwendolyn Garcia defended the provincial government's handling of the P1.2-billion special education fund (SEF) during her term, emphasizing that the Capitol had long practiced sound financial management to maximize government resources.
Gwen explained that, under her administration, idle funds were strategically placed in overnight deposits with Land Bank, earning millions in interest that would otherwise have gone unused.
In an interview with Brigada News FM, Gwen said the money was placed under a special overnight rate of 6 percent and, in just six months, the province earned P345 million in interest from the idle funds.
Two percent of the real property tax collections were earmarked for the SEF, which reached P1.2 billion under her term, she added.
