Capitol initial report on aquaculture sector: P9.3 million damage, losses
The Freeman
|October 15, 2025
It was not the fields but the waters that suffered the most devastation from the 6.9-magnitude earthquake that struck northern Cebu on September 30.
-
According to the Cebu provincial government’s initial assessment, the province’s aquaculture sector has so far sustained an estimated P9.3 million in damages and losses.
The powerful quake that rocked northern Cebu caused not only structural damage to homes and public facilities but also disrupted the livelihoods of farmers and fisherfolk who depend on the land and sea for daily living.
In its initial Damage and Loss Assessment Report released on October 13, the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA) revealed that the earthquake severely affected both aquaculture and capture fisheries operations across several northern towns.
The quake damaged fish cages, pens, boats, and post-harvest facilities—critical structures that support the province’s local production and trade.
