State sharpens edge in electronics manufacturing

Tamil Nadu has moved to consolidate its position as a pivotal centre for electronics manufacturing with the approval of 22 new proposals under the Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme, signalling a decisive push to deepen domestic capabilities in a sector that sits at the heart of global supply chains.

The projects, led by companies including Foxconn, Dixon Technologies, Tata Electronics and Samsung, carry a projected investment of ₹41,863 crore and are expected to generate production worth ₹2,58,152 crore over their lifecycle.

The third set of clearances under the scheme is projected to create 33,791 direct jobs and strengthen the local ecosystem for components that are currently imported at scale, ranging from printed circuit boards and camera modules to connectors, display sub-assemblies and passive components.

Officials say the emphasis is on value addition rather than assembly alone, with the state seeking to anchor upstream and midstream manufacturing alongside finished electronics.

The approvals come at a time when global electronics companies are reassessing supply chains in response to geopolitical tensions, trade disruptions and cost pressures.
