Pedestrian priority policy unveiled

Pedestrians may finally get the space and safety they deserve. Acting on Supreme Court directives, the Maharashtra government on Monday issued a sweeping 14-point circular to all municipal corporations (MCs), mandating measures to make city roads safer and more pedestrian-friendly.
The state has asked every MC to reserve 1% of its annual budget exclusively for road safety, traffic discipline, and public awareness initiatives. The move follows an October 7 apex court order in response to a PIL filed by S Rajasekaran on pedestrian safety and traffic management. The timing of the order is also significant, coming ahead of the civic body polls slated for January next year.
