January 28, 2026

For the first time in the civic body’s history, the Municipal Commissioner, Bhushan Gagrani, will act as the Presiding Authority for the election of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of BMC, following amendments to the Mumbai Municipal Corporation (Conduct of Election to the Office of Mayor and Deputy Mayor) Rules.

- Devashri Bhujbal

According to senior BMC officials, the change stems from a government resolution (GR) issued by the state urban development department (UDD). Under the amended rules, Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani will preside over a special meeting of the newly elected corporators in the BMC House to conduct the elections to the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

Political parties will submit their nominations, following which voting will take place through a show of hands.
