Thousands write to SC to recall Nov 7 stray dog removal order

At 9am on Saturday (November 29), a few people walked into the post office at Anantnag to speed post letters. Thousands of miles away, in Mumbai, scores of them did the same, and so did a young girl in Kanyakumari. By itself the fact is completely ordinary, but what made it unique was the fact that the letters posted were the same.

No ordinary letters, these were letter petitions. Of the many ways prescribed to bring an issue of public importance to the Supreme Court, a letter petition is one of them. The aforementioned have requested a stay, recall and reconsideration of the order passed in the Community Animals Matter on November 7 to remove dogs from institutional areas.

Given the deep anguish felt by them, ordinary citizens throughout the country are exercising their right of respectful and constitutional engagement with the court, highlighting their reservations about the order. Prominent celebrities like Robin Singh of Peepal Farms, Cyrus Bharucha, Divya Seth and Rupa Ganguly have also come out in support of the movement.
