Kerala rolls out marriage registration via video

Kerala has launched a video e-KYC marriage registration system under its K-SMART platform, allowing couples to complete legal registration from anywhere in the world without being physically present at a local body.
The system, developed by the Information Kerala Mission under the state Local Self-Government Department, has already recorded more than 62,000 digital registrations since its rollout.
The new system, introduced in urban local bodies in January 2024 and later extended to rural areas as of April 2025, permits the bride, groom and witnesses to verify their identity via video KYC using Aadhaar-based OTP or email authentication. Once verification is completed, the marriage certificate is digitally signed and made available for download.
