Theyyam revival faces growing commercial pressures

The ceremonial season of Theyyam is under way across the entire northern part of Kerala, a cultural cornerstone that stretches from mid-October through to late May or early June.

As the ritual performances recommence in the sacred groves and village temples, observers are raising alarms about deepening changes to the tradition's values, aesthetics and social role.

Leading scholars of local ritual culture, including Dr R.C. Karippath and Dr Ambikasuthan Mangad, are calling attention to the evolving character of the art form, asserting that the boundary between spiritual devotion and entertainment is narrowing.

According to Dr Karippath, materials like plastic and synthetic fabrics are replacing the authentic costumes once made from natural elements, and the traditional face and body paints are being abandoned. Dr Mangad warns that video-centric and tourist -- oriented displays are turning the performance into a spectacle rather than a rite of devotion.
