UP boosts PWD autonomy, first major rule overhaul in 30 years

In a major administrative reform, the Uttar Pradesh government has approved a fivefold increase in the financial powers of Public Works Department (PWD) officers and a complete revision of service rules after three decades.

The move aims to speed up decision-making, reduce red tape, and enhance transparency in public infrastructure projects.

Officials noted that PWD's financial powers were last revised in 1995, even as construction costs have risen more than five times since then. The new structure, approved by the Chief Minister, brings financial limits in line with current economic conditions and project demands.
