Chennai Metro to unlock space for shops and dining
The Free Press Journal - Indore
|October 28, 2025
Chennai Metro Rail Limited has launched a plan to convert more than 14 000 square metres of underused space at 26 of its stations into shops, restaurants and recreational outlets.
The initiative targets street-level and concourse areas that have remained largely vacant until now.
Officials explained that while many stations already host street-level retail, the ticketing and concourse levels were seldom occupied because passenger footfall was once limited and basic utilities such as water and power were not prioritised.
With patronage growing, the authority has completed the required infrastructure upgrades to enable commercial leasing.
Stations located at Teynampet, Alandur, Vadapalani, Egmore and Wimco Nagar have been identified as priority sites for this roll-out. Bidding processes are underway and contracts are expected to be awarded within three months. The commercial uses envisioned include co-working spaces, supermarkets and food-and-beverage outlets.
