G. Venkatraman has been appointed as the acting Director General of Police and Head of Police Force of Tamil Nadu following the retirement of Shankar Jiwal on 31 August 2025, despite concerns that the state government did not adhere to the Supreme Court's Prakash Singh guidelines.
The Federal reports that a contempt petition has been filed in the Supreme Court, alleging violation of the mandatory three-month prior consultation with the UPSC and the prohibition of interim appointments.
The petition argues that these acts undermine the independence of the police leadership structure and disregard judicial mandates.
