Safiya PM, a 51-year-old social activist from Kerala, has brought forth a landmark case challenging the religious and caste-based structures within India's legal framework.
On January 28, Safiya moved the Supreme Court with a set of bold demands, calling for a declaration that would significantly alter the way personal law is applied to individuals. Her case addresses the intersection of religion, succession law, and individual freedom, putting forward the argument that certain sections of Indian law discriminate against people who wish to live without religious or caste affiliations.
As a member of the Ex-Muslims of Kerala, Safiya's legal petition challenges the legal bindings of the Muslim Personal Law Application Act of 1937, specifically its imposition on individuals who no longer wish to be governed by it.
