A surge in gold thefts across Kerala has sparked concern, with recent arrests pointing to individuals driven by financial pressures.

- HD Bureau

As the price of gold remains high, hovering around ₹1 lakh per sovereign, some have resorted to extreme measures. Among the accused are local politicians and a school employee, all of whom had no prior criminal records. On October 18, Kuthuparamba Municipal Councillor P.P. Rajesh was arrested for allegedly stealing a gold necklace from a 77-year-old woman in Kanniyarkunnu. The woman was performing her household chores when the crime took place.

Following his arrest, Rajesh was expelled from the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the party to which he had previously belonged.
