Small modular reactors being developed to boost India's nuclear energy capacity, RS told

Minister of state for personnel, public grievances & pensions and PM's office Dr Jitendra Singh said that India is designing and developing Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and will consider deployment in brown field sites as a part of Nuclear Energy Mission to enhance India's nuclear energy capacity and with an objective to replace retiring thermal power plants to decarbonise the energy sector.

In a reply to the question by Rajya Sabha MP Kartikeya Sharma, the Minister said that the Centre has planned to make prototype demonstration reactors for establishing technology for design, construction and operation of reactors before commercial deployment.

Three demonstration reactors are planned for development and deployment, he said.
