Sleep Apnea: Recognizing the silence, and finding rest

These pauses, known as apneas, can last from a few seconds to minutes and may occur dozens of times an hour. This chronic cycle of oxygen deprivation and fragmented sleep prevents the body from achieving restorative rest, leading to significant daytime impairment and serious long-term health risks. It is a condition often missed, as the most dramatic symptoms occur while the person is unconscious, making awareness and diagnosis critical.

Sleep apnea is broadly categorized into three main types:

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA): This is the most common form. It occurs when the muscles in the back of the throat relax, allowing the soft tissue—such as the tongue and soft palate—to collapse and partially or completely block the airway. The body's effort to overcome this blockage often results in a gasp, snort, or loud snore.

Central Sleep Apnea (CSA): This less common type is due to a communication issue between the brain and the breathing muscles. The brain fails to send the correct signals to the muscles that control breathing, meaning the body simply stops trying to breathe for a period. CSA is less often associated with loud snoring.

Complex Sleep Apnea Syndrome (Mixed Sleep Apnea): This is a combination of both OSA and CSA.

Symptoms of sleep apnea can be divided into those noticed during the night and those experienced during the day, which result from the lack of quality sleep.
