Shravan Celebrations in Rajasthan: Devotion, Dance, Rain, Rituals
The Daily Guardian
|July 14, 2025
As per Hindu mythology, on the third day after the new moon in Shravana, Goddess Parvati (Ma Parvati) journeyed to her husband Shiva's (Mahadev's) abode, reuniting with him.
This divine union is celebrated as Teej throughout India, particularly in Rajasthan—a festival synonymous with the vibrant hues of the monsoon.
Rajasthan showcases Teej in all its grandeur: swings adorned with flowers, melodious traditional songs, and energetic folk dances. Women, dressed in green—representing fertility and fresh monsoon foliage—sway on decorated swings while singing evocative Teej melodies like "Peacocks." These festive dances and vibrant fairs, lasting over a week, beautifully capture Rajasthani cultural exuberance and theatricality. Dedicated to Goddess Uma, Teej is a celebration of conjugal love and marital bliss.
Celebrated across the rainy season, each region within Rajasthan adds its own local flavor. The festivities include donning colorful traditional attire, adorning new bangles, intricate mehendi (henna) designs, and enjoying festive delicacies. Teej embodies the eternal love between Lord Shiva and Parvati—women pray for a happy, long-lasting married life.
