Mandawa, located in Rajasthan's Shekhawati region, is a town where history comes alive through vibrant wall paintings. Time seems to pause here, as every haveli and street tells a colorful story of the past through its art.

Often called the “Open-Air Art Gallery of Rajasthan,” this small town is not just a destination; it's a historical timeline spread across dusty lanes, centuries-old havelis, and intricately frescoed walls that whisper stories of merchants, kings, culture, and change.

Traveling through Mandawa is like stepping into a vibrant time capsule - each corner holds a brushstroke from the past, inviting modern travelers to witness the layered grandeur of Rajasthan's trading and artistic legacy. Here's a journey through time in the lanes of Mandawa.

18TH CENTURY: THE BIRTH OF MANDAWA'S GRANDEUR

Mandawa was founded in the mid-18th century by Thakur Nawal Singh, a descendant of the Shekhawat Rajputs. At the time, the region was a burgeoning hub along the old silk route, attracting wealthy merchants from across the country. Recognizing its potential, Nawal Singh constructed the majestic Mandawa Fort — a focal point for defense, governance, and the rising prosperity of the town.

This era marked the beginning of Mandawa’s transformation into a cultural and commercial epicenter. The construction of elaborate havelis began, as prosperous merchants sought to exhibit their wealth and status not just through trade but also through architecture and art.
