Khitish Pandya: A silk route to sustainable impact
The Daily Guardian
|June 02, 2025
In a world increasingly leaning toward fast fashion and automation, Khitish Pandya has chosen a different path—one that is slow, deliberate, rooted in nature, and steeped in purpose.
The founder of Ecotasar, Pandya has spent over two decades building a business that uses India's traditional tasar silk to not only cater to global fashion markets but also to generate livelihoods for thousands of rural and tribal women.
Based out of Delhi and working extensively across Bihar and Jharkhand, Ecotasar is not your typical textile company. It's part enterprise, part social movement. "Our idea was always to create income opportunities at the source, so people wouldn't have to migrate," says Pandya.
From 2000 to 2007 Pandya laid the foundation for what would become Ecotasar with incubation support from the NGO PRADAN. Founded in 2007, the company specializes in natural fibre-based, hand-crafted fashion and furnishing products. But at its core, Ecotasar is about enabling women—particularly from marginalized communities—to earn a dignified livelihood.
