Is GenAI technology a plagiarizing machine?

Try this. Write an article that provides new perspectives on a subject and post it on the internet (say, as a blog). After a few days, ask a popular GenAI tool to create an article on the same subject.
Representational Image.
There's a good chance that GenAI lifts content from your blog and throws an article at you without giving you credit. This shouldn't actually surprise you because that's what GenAI is broadly designed to do.
The fundamental difference between a search engine (say, Google) and GenAI is that search engine just points (provides link) towards best sources of content on internet (thus retains identity of the original content with its source) but GenAI uses the online content, rearranges and rephrases it and presents as it’s own gyaan (in most cases, when it doesn't provide credits for original sources). Now that's plagiarism institutionalized on an industrial scale using lightening quick technology. No wonder, there have been claims by the likes of The New York Times, ANI(India), John Girsham, Canadian broadcaster CBC against GenAI platforms for alleged plagiarizing their content.
