INDIA CALLS US TRADE DEAL NARRATIVE INACCURATE

India on Friday rejected US pressure on Russian oil and dismissed claims of a stalled trade deal, reaffirming energy security as its top priority.

India on Friday said its energy and trade decisions remain guided by national interest, as it responded to a proposed bill in the United States Congress seeking to impose a 500 per cent duty on countries that continue to purchase Russian oil, and separately rejected claims that a bilateral trade deal with Washington failed due to lack of political outreach.

Responding to queries on the proposed legislation, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said New Delhi was aware of the bill and was closely monitoring developments .He reiterated that India's approach to energy sourcing is driven by evolving global market dynamics and the need to secure affordable energy for its1.4 billion people.

Current tariffs: 50% duty on Indian goods entering the US since August 2025.
