Half of India's farmers reeling in debt trap, Andhra worst

The agriculture sector continues to reel under debts as every agricultural household in the country bears an average debt of Rs 74,121 and over 50% of farmers in the country are under the debt.
Besides, the debt in the agricultural sector has risen sharply, reaching Rs 25.47 lakh crore in 2023-24 compared to Rs 13.93 lakh crore in 2019-20.
This information was revealed in a written statement in the Lok Sabha by Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Bhagirath Choudhary in the response of a question. The minister informed the House that the crop loans extended to farmers increased to Rs. 15.07 lakh crore in 2023-24 from Rs. 8.25 lakh crore in 2019-20, while term loans rose to Rs. 10.40 lakh crore from Rs. 5.68 lakh crore during the same period.
