Eye care: Digital strain remedies for clear vision

Yet, despite their value, eye care is often neglected until problems arise. With increasing screen time, environmental pollution, and aging populations, eye health is now more critical than ever.

This article explores the essentials of eye care, common vision problems, preventive strategies, and how to maintain lifelong visual health.

WHY EYE CARE MATTERS

Eyes are our windows to the world, responsible for about 80% of what we perceive. Poor eye health doesn't just affect vision; it can impact mental health, productivity, and quality of life. Visual impairment can lead to falls, accidents, depression, and social withdrawal. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that over 2.2 billion people globally have some form of vision impairment, half of which could have been prevented or treated.

Proper eye care not only prevents disease but also ensures early detection of underlying health issues such as diabetes and hypertension, which often manifest symptoms through the eyes.

COMMON EYE PROBLEMS

Understanding common eye conditions can help in identifying symptoms early and seeking timely treatment.

1. Refractive Errors

These include nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), astigmatism, and presbyopia. Refractive errors are the most common causes of visual impairment and are usually corrected with glasses, contact lenses, or surgery.

2. Dry Eye Syndrome

Caused by inadequate tear production or poor tear quality, dry eye leads to discomfort, redness, and a gritty sensation. It is often exacerbated by excessive screen time, aging, and environmental conditions.

3. Cataracts

A clouding of the eye's natural lens, cataracts are a leading cause of blindness, particularly in older adults. Fortunately, cataract surgery is one of the most common and successful procedures worldwide.

4. Glaucoma
