EU seals historic deal to end all Russian gas and oil imports by 2027

The European Union has declared a “new era” of full energy independence from Russia, approving a landmark plan to phase out all Russian gas and oil imports by the end of 2027.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the shift on Wednesday after EU institutions reached an overnight agreement. Gas imports will cease by autumn 2027, with strict deadlines set for ending both long-term and short-term supply contracts. “This is the dawn of a new era,” she said, calling the decision central to ending Europe's reliance on Russian energy following the invasion of Ukraine.
