Emerging careers: Science and nature storytelling
The Daily Guardian
|May 14, 2025
In an era of accelerating environmental challenges—ranging from climate change to biodiversity decline—science communication is crucial in bridging the gap between scientific knowledge and public understanding.

By translating complex data into accessible narratives, science communicators empower communities, policymakers, and individuals to make informed decisions that drive sustainability.
Similarly, nature storytelling can help us rebuild our connections with the natural world and make us realize how central it is to our existence. It makes us more mindful of the world around us while educating us about it. For example, the fragile-looking dragonfly that we often spot outdoors travels from Africa to India in the monsoon to breed in our shallow rain puddles. Communicating the wonders of science and the natural world draws your attention to the little things you'd normally ignore—the pigeon by your window, the caterpillar on your curry leaf plant, or the spider in your bathroom.
The power of science and nature communication Science and nature communication bring the natural world closer to people through compelling storytelling. When science is made relatable, it fosters a deeper connection to nature, inspiring a sense of responsibility and stewardship. For example, a passerby may overlook a banyan tree by the roadside. However, through effective storytelling, a science communicator can highlight its ecological significance—how it sustains birds and mammals during lean periods, provides shelter with its dense canopy and aerial roots, and holds cultural and spiritual value in various traditions. By making science engaging without compromising accuracy, communicators help raise awareness about urgent issues like deforestation, endangered species, and overlooked ecosystems, inspiring action for conservation.
