Delhi Govt launches 'Atal Canteen Scheme' to offer Rs 5 meals to poor

In a bid to promote social equality and food security, the Rekha Gupta-led Delhi government has launched the 'Atal Canteen Scheme', offering clean, hot and nutritious meals to the poor daily wage earners and common citizens at a subsidised rate of just Rs 5.

Announcing the scheme, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the initiative embodies dignity, equality and compassion. “Atal Canteen will become the soul of Delhi a place where no one will have to sleep hungry," she said.

In the first phase, 100 Atal Canteens will be established across the national capital, with sites already identified. The facilities will be inaugurated on the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, in whose honour the scheme is named.
