Forty two years after the massacre of hundreds of immigrant’ Muslims at Nellie in Assam had shocked the nation, the BJP-led state government has decided to table the ‘Tewari Commission Inquiry Report in the upcoming Assembly session in November — months ahead of the State Assembly elections.

The decision was announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who said the move aims to “help the new generation understand the circumstances in which the massacre took place.”
The Tewari Commission was set up by the then Congress Government headed by Chief Minister Hiteswar Saikia, and the report was submitted in 1985. However, successive governments refrained from making it public, citing its sensitive nature.
