Anna Sagar Lake, Ajmer: A historical and cultural landmark
The Daily Guardian
|May 29, 2025
Anna Sagar Lake is a serene water body that has been an integral part of the city's landscape for centuries in Ajmer, Rajasthan.
More than just a lake, Anna Sagar serves as a testament to the vision and legacy of the rulers of Ajmer, blending history, architecture, and nature. It is a symbol of the ingenuity of ancient water management and an enduring cultural heritage site that continues to draw visitors, locals, and historians alike.
ORIGINS AND HISTORICAL BACKGROUND Anna Sagar Lake was constructed in the 12th century by Arnoraja Chauhan, also known as Ana or Anna, a ruler of the Chauhan dynasty who governed the region around Ajmer. The Chauhan dynasty was one of the prominent Rajput clans, and under their reign, Ajmer became a flourishing center of culture, trade, and military strength. Arnoraja's decision to build the lake was a significant infrastructural development aimed at addressing water scarcity in the region.
Ajmer, being located in the semi-arid zone of Rajasthan, historically faced challenges related to water availability. Lakes and stepwells were crucial for sustaining urban settlements and agriculture in this harsh climate. Anna Sagar was designed as an artificial reservoir to harvest and store rainwater, ensuring a stable water supply for the city and its inhabitants throughout the year.
The lake was named after Arnoraja's nickname "Anna," and it was an impressive feat of engineering for its time. The construction of Anna Sagar showcased not only the technical expertise of the period but also the ruler's commitment to the welfare of his subjects. This was a common theme among Rajput rulers, who often invested in public works such as forts, temples, and water reservoirs as a way to demonstrate their power and benevolence.
