2 more arrested for rape of medical student in Durgapur

As protests continue in Durgapur and Kolkata, with student bodies and women's groups demanding swift justice in the alleged gangrape of a 23-year-old medical student near her college campus, police on Monday arrested two more men, taking the total number of accused in custody to five.

The case has triggered outrage across West Bengal and neighbouring Odisha, where the survivor hails from.

Police identified the latest arrestees as Sheikh Safiqul and Sheikh Nasiruddin.

They were produced before a Durgapur court along with three others - Apu Bauri (21), Firdous Sheikh (23), and Sheikh Riazuddin (32) - arrested earlier. All five have been remanded to 10 days of police custody under Sections 70(1) (gang rape) and 3(5) (crime committed with common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

According to the Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate, the arrests were based on call records, medical evidence, and other circumstantial clues.
