TikTok challenge raises taxi alarm

The TikTok #BrokenTaxiChron- icles challenge has gone viral - shedding light on the alarming state of South Africa’s minibus taxis, exposing dangerous safe- ty failures and sparking wide- spread concern over the public transport sector’s deteriorating condition.

The challenge has seen com- muters across the country shar- ing shocking videos and accounts of taxis with faulty brakes, mal- functioning doors, ineffective windshield wipers, and danger- ously worn tyres.

The Automobile Association (AA) has responded to the social media outcry, calling for urgent intervention to remove unsafe taxis from the roads before more lives are put at risk.

SA’s public transport system has long been plagued by safety concerns, but the viral trend has amplified the issue, prompting renewed pressure on authorities.
